I am a January! This is my time to plan, and reflect on how to do things better in the upcoming year. One revelation I'll share with my audience is that fall planting is not the hill I'll die on! It has some strong arguments for some growers like, producing voluptuous greens without bug holes and vacant fire ant mounds but after that, my list is done! Maybe starting this blog off with "I'm a January" is a bit of a contradiction because I should love being out in the cooler months and I do but my soil just doesn't want to act right. That's right I'm blaming it on the soil, it was dry, crumbly and totally uncooperative. It didn't welcome the Kohlrabi, it didn't love on my broccoli and it tried to smother my kale! Remind me to Hi-Five the next fall farmer with a CSA because he needs to join club January and teach! Lets see, what else did I learn in 2025? Not to run down an icy flight of steps like it's 1999! Yep I spent January through March with my leg in a brace because my knee was cracked. I watched Gunsmoke like I was apart of that era, and guess what, those homesteaders in Kansas struggled in the winter too! Maybe I should leave the farming to those who excel at it in the fall and winter, support them with fist bumps and money while waiting for my time to shine. Don't worry I won't be idle, I'll be knitting, crocheting, painting and ordering more seed catalogues, because that's when I do my best thinking and planning, when my hands and fingers are moving. What does this all mean and why am I sharing this with you, because in the midst of the winter fallout, I am learning to enjoy every moment. It hasn't been easy but I'm working on it, and logging the lessons as I go along. Goodbye yesterday, Hello tomorrow.
